Verbs Requiring Indirect Objects

Verbs requiring indirect objects must use a preposition before the object. Although often omitted in English, the preposition is obligatory in French and accompanies the verbs that follow:

  • appartenir à (belong to)

  • apprendre à (teach)

  • donner à (give)

  • enseigner à (teach)

  • obéir à (obey)

  • pardonner à (forgive)

  • penser à (think about)

  • répondre à (answer)

  • ressembler à (resemble)

Consider the following examples:

  • Les élèves obéissent au professeur. (The students obey the teacher)

  • Les élèves lui obéissent. (The students obey him.)
